When someone comes to us and says they want shrink their hips, the first thing we have to discuss with them is targeting training. When someone needs to lose a certain amount of fat in an area, we let the personal training client know that spot reducing does not work, but can actually make that area bigger. The reason this happens so often is that people think that if they work their abs, hips, butt, etc., that it will magically just disappear. What needs to be taken into consideration is increasing their entire level of activity in order to decrease their fat cells, so they can increase their lean body mass.
When body fat percentage is decreased and lean body mass is achieved, then if certain areas need to be paid attention to, then it is okay to focus on a certain body part! One of the best exercises that you can do when you are starting to work with your Portland Oregon personal trainer or health fitness professional is start to walk on your off days. Meaning, when you are not training in the gym, go for a walk, because it is going to work your major muscle groups.
You also need to look at your genetics and where you tend to store your fat tissue. Some individual will have super flat stomachs, but store all of their fat in their mid hip area. Others will have a protruding stomach, but a very slip lower and upper body. When you start a training program and you are starting to see results, the next thing you need to focus on is the types of foods you are eating. One of the best things that you can practice at the beginning is to keep a food journal.
The importance of a food journal is to see what types of foods you like to eat, what types of foods are not serving you well and what types of foods may make you retain water or bloat you. Also, when you write your food down, you are actually seeing what you are eating and it will help you realize if you are eating too many sweets, carbohydrates, fats and proteins.
